Spiritual direction is an ancient form of soul care, that helps heal and deepen your relationship with God by directing your attention to Jesus as he is revealed in his word.
A spiritual director is specially trained to listen deeply to you, and to God with you. Together in a confidential one-on-one setting, a spiritual director gently helps you to receive Christ’s forgiveness, grace, and wisdom, and to freely love and serve others from a place of security and peace with God.
A spiritual director is not a therapist, a coach, or a teacher. (As wonderful as all those roles are!) A spiritual director doesn't tell you what to do. Instead, a spiritual director is more like a trusted friend who walks with you on life’s journey and directs your attention to Jesus as he speaks through his word into your heart.
Brandon is our trained spiritual director who values compassion and hospitality. He is married with five children, a ministry leadership veteran, a family trauma survivor, and a self-professed recovering anxiety addict.
As a spiritual director his desire is to help you experience Jesus as a real person who is secure, loving, and present. He loves helping people discern God’s invitations, corrections, and challenges, and supporting them as they take the “leaps of faith” God may ask of them.
Most of us have been taught that the Christian life is about doing more: more Bible reading, more prayer, more service, more effort. And when we hit a wall, when God feels distant, when life doesn't make sense, we assume we need to try harder.
But the Christian life is not about spiritual performance! It’s about surrendering more deeply to the God who already loves you.
We begin with the conviction that Jesus has already done everything necessary for your salvation and for you to have a close relationship with him. We don't need to climb a spiritual ladder to reach God. Jesus has climbed the ladder down to you.
In spiritual direction you are invited to get off the treadmill of spiritual achievement and to live freely with Christ, in his forgiveness, in his love. From this place of deep felt security and peace with God, you are freed to pursue the Christlike path of loving and serving others without fear or obligation.
Many of us carry a lot of “spiritual baggage” in our relationship with God. We may have suffered church hurt or spiritual abuse. We may feel that God feels the same disappointment, disgust, or anger that we feel towards ourselves.
In spiritual direction we are invited to enter a relationship with a trusted friend who can help disentangle our false beliefs about God and experience him as he really is. As someone who is delighted in us, always forgives our sins, and would rather die than let us be lost or trapped in a fallen world.
Spiritual direction is about your whole life: your work, your family, your struggles, your joys. God cares about all of it, and he is present in all of it.
In these everyday vocations – our roles as parents, friends, workers, and citizens – we are called to active, self-giving love. But we often feel that our successes or failures in these roles are the measure of our holiness and acceptability to God.
We easily forget that before God, we are pure receivers. We receive his forgiveness, his grace, his providential care. In spiritual direction you are gently reminded that God does for us what we are incapable of doing ourselves, and this frees us to serve others wisely and freely.
Sometimes we just want to deepen our sense of God’s presence and care. We want what we know about God to be a felt reality in our everyday lives. A spiritual director can help you bridge this gap.
As you share your story, a spiritual director may ask: Where is God in this for you? What is Jesus saying to you here? Where do you sense the Holy Spirit at work?
These kinds of questions make spiritual direction unique. It's an invitation to notice where God is present and active, concretely and currently, in your life. Not God in the abstract, but the living Christ who meets you in Scripture, in the waters of your baptism, at his table, and in the ordinary moments of your daily life.
Spiritual direction is for anyone who wants to grow closer to God by practicing receiving his love and noticing his presence!
